USB Drive Says File Is Too Large: FAT32 and exFAT Explained

September 30, 2026

Quick answer: A USB drive can have plenty of free space and still reject one large file because its file system has a per-file limit. FAT32 cannot store a single file of 4GiB or larger. A suitable exFAT drive can avoid that particular limit, if all receiving devices support it.

This often matters when transferring a long recording or a large project archive between computers. In Pakistan, check the actual computer or playback device used by the recipient before changing the USB drive's format.

What to do, step by step

Read the exact error and check the file's size. Compare the drive's free space and file system in its properties; do not assume capacity is the only limit.
Copy all existing drive contents to another verified location before considering formatting. Formatting erases the drive.
Check exFAT support on every intended device. A TV, car stereo or older recorder may impose its own restrictions even when both computers support exFAT.
If the destination supports it, format the correct drive using your operating system's documented process. Double-check the selected drive name and capacity before confirming.
Copy the large file and open it at the destination. Keep the original until the recipient confirms that the file works.

When you cannot change the drive

Ask the recipient for another supported transfer route, such as a controlled download link or a different drive. Splitting an archive requires the recipient to know how to reassemble it and is unsuitable for a video that must play directly from the USB device.

Frequently asked question

Does exFAT make every USB drive faster?

No. Changing the file system addresses compatibility and file-size constraints; it does not upgrade the drive's hardware.

Roman Urdu summary

USB mein jagah ho phir bhi FAT32 bari single file rok sakta hai. Format se pehle backup lazmi karein.
